The key to the value of aluminum lies in its high strength to weight ratio. Aluminum can endure strong forces over long periods of time, but its also very light, making ideal for anything that has to hang or be suspended, such as the decorative cross above. It’s also one of the least expensive materials for fabrication purposes. It’s non-magnetic, and much more corrosion resistant than steel.
